The Brief

Having produced more than 30 exhibition subsites and 15 online portrait features for the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) since designing and developing the initial site in 2002, in 2006 Link was tasked with revitalising the site and enhancing the online accessibility of the Collection to the public. The Gallery further sought to now manage the creative approach to promoting exhibitions.

The Approach

In consultation with the client, specific concerns were addressed, not least of all, the requirement that the design work be of a minimalist nature so as to not detract from the artworks being viewed.

Link implemented a fresh design across the NPG site and, to afford the Gallery creative control in the promotion of exhibitions, developed a Content Management System that incorporates an ability to reference uniquely developed subsites.

Link also integrated the site with an XML feed, drawn from the Gallery's existing collection management software, KE EMu.

The Result

With a stylish yet simple design, the site now allows visitors to search the Gallery's 'marked for public' content and discover works held in the permanent collection, while the manner in which exhibitions are promoted, is at the Gallery's discretion.
